I have just finished reading 'American Wife'by Curtis Sittenfeld (only ok) and have a choice of the following books on my nightstand:

The Rose of Sebastopol-Katharine McMahon
Havoc in the Third Year-Ronan Bennett
One Good Turn-A Jolly Murder Mystery- Kate Atkinson
Which should I go for or should I just tackle Middlesex instead??
Claire.....no question ..The Kite Runner.its a great read.You wont be able to resist wanting to protect the main character .Its a sad story but a page turner.Dont know book 2.Book 3 is depressing and book 4 is clever but no one will pull at your heartstrings like Hassan in The Kite runner.read the book then watch the film ....if you havent run out of tissues! By the way have you read Crow lake by Mary lawson?

Thanks for that. As you can see I plumped for Rose of Sebastopol which so far is a good read, hoping it will get a bit meatier. Set in the time of the Crimean war.
I will definately get to the Kite Runner. I have heard about the central 'incident' so I'm a bit afraid that that will be too graphic and upsetting. Still, all the hundreds of fans can't be wrong. I read the Book seller of Kabul which was fascinating but upsetting as well.
I have read Crow Lake (Bookclub) but I didn't like it at all. Far too many descriptions of water, trees, insects etc for my liking! I like books about people and human nature.

Claire keep us posted when you get to Kiterunner, its always good to hear another view on it. Read it myself and loved it. If you like it, then add A Thousand Splendid Suns to your nightstand by same author, although leave a break between these 2 books. Another great book, I'm not one for lots of description in a book but for some reason i can withstand it from this author. You can practically feel the heat and dust when reading it.
On another note, what did you make of American Wife ? I believe it's loosely based on Bush's wife and his presidency. I have it in my pile to read at the moment but keep passing it by for another choice.

Have still to get to Kite Runner - but I will! Also have A Thousand Splendid Suns somewhere in the house.
American Wife was a grand read - but nothing very remarkable. I found I had to google Laura Bush to find out what was fact and what was fiction. It would be a good holiday read, not tooo taxing.
Am liking Middlesex a lot though - even though some of the scenes in Greece/Turkey are very graphic.
I really recommend Middlesex. Read it a couple of years ago and I still think about it.
